The surprising journey that led me to pursue a career in fashion

During my early childhood in Alabama, I was the definition of a tomboy - always climbing trees, playing outside, and beating the boys at sports. The idea of working in fashion couldn't have been further from my mind. 

For a long time, because of what I saw around me, I thought my path was set: go to college, join a sorority, find a husband, become a mom, but when I got to college, I felt like there was something more, a different path I was meant to be on. 

I took a leap of faith and transferred to The College of William & Mary 12 hours away from home. 

Being surrounded by my ambitious peers inspired me & led me to embark on the journey of a lifetime, carving a path for myself that I could never have imagined. The highly competitive, magical, fast-paced fashion industry was my industry of choice, and what better place to find an internship/job than New York City?! 

With me, if there’s a will, there’s a way, & nothing was going to stop me from achieving this. 

I pursued breaking into the fashion industry with everything I had. I threw myself into networking, soaking up everything I could learn. All the work paid off when I landed my dream job at the luxury retailer, Barneys New York, after graduation. 

While working at Barneys, I realized I needed a creative outlet. Working on the buying team can be very analytical & math heavy. 

I wanted to share how I broke into the fashion industry (digital courses on how I did this coming soon!), what it was like working in it + my top career tips I was learning while working at one of the top fashion companies in the world. 

Secondly, I fell hard for the incredible emerging brands I was working with and wanted to share their stories so you could learn about the hottest up-and-coming brands before anyone else & know the story behind the label.

So once again, I leapt into the unknown. I launched my own blog while still working on the buying team at Barneys. Those early days of interviewing emerging designers and telling the stories of the brands I loved, planted the seeds for the company my mom, Alison, and I have built with The Style That Binds Us today.

If I could go back and tell my 16-year-old self that one day she'd be working in the fashion industry & living in New York City, building a business with her mom and empowering women all over the world, she would’ve been quite surprised! 

I've learned that growth and transformation happen when you step outside your comfort zone and bet on yourself. Little did I know what had been inside of me all along, what was waiting to be discovered. 

Sometimes it’s what’s in the unknown that can lead to unlimited possibilities and living an extraordinary life.
